Kiamaiko Foundation

How Do We Select Our Beneficiaries?

Application Stage

We welcome applications from any student residing in the Kiamaiko slum and who has completed Class 8. They must have received above 320 out of 500 on the KCPE exam (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education).

The students fill out an application form with their basic details, a short autobiography, a recommendation from a teacher in their primary school, and their KCPE exam results slip. After a careful review, the best applicants are chosen for the interview stage.

Interview Stage

The successful applicants are interviewed by 2 external volunteers and The Foundation’s Director of Student Development.

The interviewers look for grit and determination, not just academic results. Each student is scored on this criterion and those selected qualify for the home visit stage.

Home Visit Stage

We only sponsor students from the neediest backgrounds. That’s why the Director of Student Development pays a visit to their homes.
During this informal visit, the Director talks to the parents to learn more about the family’s situation before offering acceptance into the Sponsorship Program.
